Richard and Michele Chavez
Michele grew up in Glendale, Arizona, and graduated from Glendale High School. She received her associate degree from Palomar College in San Marcos, California. From 1984 to 2007, she was a member of SGI-USA.
Richard and Michele met at an SGI meeting in February 1986 and were married in December 1986. Because she no longer agrees with SGI doctrime, Michele left SGI in 2007. Richard followed soon after, when SGI leaders no longer allowed him to have meetings at their home. They found a wonderful sangha in the independent Gathering of Friends, which they attend in Granada Hills each month.
After 6 months of study, Michele became a member of Nichiren Shu.
Richard and Michele live in the high desert in Palmdale, California in the Antelope Valley, where Richard has been involved in community theater, performing in The Fantasicks, The Importance of Being Earnest, Rose-Marie, Fiddler on the Roof, 1776, and Li'l Abner with Desert Opera Theatre at the Palmdale Playhouse. He also performed in Mister Roberts at the Cedar Street Theatre in Lancaster.
Richard served in the US Army and California National Guard. He attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Van Mar Academy. He is a Los Angeles Marathon Legacy Runner, having run every single Los Angeles Marathon since it started in 1986. He also studies kung fu and tai chi.
Michele represents Nichiren Buddhism on the Antelope Valley Interfaith Council. She has been a member of the Los Angeles Leggers since 2003.
